  • Houses being built
    Article: Dec 29, 2020
Radical plans to stop local people in Northamptonshire having much of a say in local planning decisions are being proposed by the Conservatives. The plans would deny people the chance to raise objections to developments and local councils will also be stripped of their powers to protect local residents from bad developments. The plans will make it easier for developers to 'build, build, build' (in the words of Boris Johnson). Under the plans, decisions would be made centrally with only one opportunity for local people to be involved, at the very early stages of the development of the local plan.
  • Borough Council Northampton
    Article: Dec 22, 2020
Northampton Borough Council survived over 800 years of turbulence and history but sadly will be scrapped under the Conservative plans.
This has come about for only one reason. The Conservatives mismanaged the County Council which they have run since 2003 causing meltdown in services and near bankruptcy in 2018. In the end national government stepped in. It was then that both Northampton MPs came out in favour of scrapping Northampton Borough Council and merging it with neighbouring mainly rural areas. Hence bouncing us all into an arrangement that suits no one.

Extra chairs had to be unstacked in the upstairs hall at the historic Chantry House in Towcester on the evening of 30th January 2020 as new local party members and old flocked to the annual general meeting of South Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats.
Outgoing Chair, Mark Allen, summed up the year. Locally the party had seen positive results in the General Election (doubling the vote) and local elections, and membership had increased. In the immediate future the local party would be focussed on a strong positive campaign in the forthcoming unitary elections.
